Arthritis Ireland & Nordic Walking 2021

I waited for many a fine set of months to avail of a place in the Naas Hospital Physio Departments scheduling program. I was thankful and am thankful to of met a nice physio lady Ann Doyle, she set my down on a chair day one and we discussed the pros and cons of leading a mostly sedentary life. I agreed mostly with what was said and suggested that I would indeed make even more conscious effort to move more, despite the pain and what not.

A few hours later I get a call from Ann she explained to me that Arthritis Ireland had setup a nordic walking group and that I should give it ago. I made the arrangements subsequently missed the first session and went the following week. The instructor Frank from Mayo was good craic and wasn’t strict on form but rather function as in he was happy to see us moving and taking part. I was well out of my comfort zone, most of the people were a good 20 to 100 years my elder.

I got stuck in and borrowed the sticks each week until I got my very own set of Leki Sticks. they are an awesomely well built set of sticks, and honestly with out them I simple don’t enjoy walking. Also worth a note that I had a stigma of being seen transversing the grasses of the curragh with the elders, however that was short live as soon as we set sail for our first Tuesday, the Tuesdays being a different day to the Wednesdays with Frank. Tuesday are a more free range go for gold and throw caution to the wind and the weather gods.

The first three times I walked the Tuesday I didn’t do the full thing turned back half an hour in as I was either exhausted or my poxy (I mean lovely knees) ached like a fat girl begging for candy bars (I mean like a rusty gate) anyway truth is, this video is the first complete day. what we don’t get from the video is the sheer tiredness that followed and the 12:30pm until 5:30pm bed time that happened, yes I crashed and burned as soon as I got home. totally fatigued and exhausted woke even worse. no onset of doms (delayed onset of muscle soreness) no no sore muscles just over all pain and fatigue aching in my neck and everywhere. I cursed myself as well as congratulated myself knowing that tomorrow would be the class in Naas with the instructor. Yes I managed to do the class and get through without issues but again on my return the chronic fatigue hit me like a hammer. Knocking seven shades of shiiizzzkabab out of me.
